Hello dear parents!
Exam season… It’s stressful for all of us, isn’t it? But especially for our children. Their tiny hearts can be overwhelmed by huge anxiety. Exam anxiety isn’t really our enemy. It’s a feeling that motivates us and helps us prepare better. But things change when the dose is too high. So, how do we deal with this anxiety? Here are a few tips for you:
Exam Anxiety: Talk Openly With Your Child
First of all, talk to your child. Really talk. Don’t just say ‘How are you?’ and move on. Try to understand how they feel. Maybe you’ve experienced it, a huge worry is hidden in that little sulky face.
You can ask questions like these:
- What do you think about exams?
- What worries you the most?
- How can I help you with this?
Remember, listening is the most important step. Listen to them without judging or criticizing. Just make them feel that you are there for them.
But… Is just talking enough?
Of course not! Here are the other steps:
1. Manage Expectations:
Know your child’s capacity. Don’t expect more than they can do. Everyone’s talents are different. What’s important is that they do their best.
2. Define Success:
Success isn’t just about exam grades. Appreciate your child’s effort and development. Maybe they won’t get the result they want in this exam. But what they learn and the experiences they gain are much more valuable.
3. Support a Healthy Lifestyle:
Sleep patterns, nutrition, exercise… They are all very important. Irregular sleep and unhealthy eating can increase anxiety. Make sure your child gets regular sleep and eats healthily. Go for walks together, play games. Distracting and relaxing will be very good.
4. Don’t Hesitate to Get Professional Help:
Sometimes things can get out of control. If your child’s anxiety is very high and negatively affects their daily life, don’t hesitate to seek help from a professional. Pedagogues and psychologists can support you in this regard.
Imagine… You are relieving the burden on your child’s shoulders. You are overcoming this difficult process together with them. How wonderful would that be, right?
Remember, you are the best parent. You know your child best. Give them your love and support. The rest will come naturally.
With love!
