Exam Anxiety: Practical Solutions for Students & Families

Hello! Exams are approaching, and that familiar feeling is back… Exam anxiety. Maybe you have butterflies in your stomach, or maybe you can’t sleep at night. Or maybe the thought ‘What if I fail?’ is gnawing at your mind. Relax, take a deep breath. You are not alone! Many students and parents feel similar things during this process.

So, where does this exam anxiety come from? Actually, a little stress can even be good for motivation. But too much can negatively affect performance.

Imagine you’re preparing for a marathon. A little excitement is good, it motivates you. But if you constantly think ‘What if I fall?’, ‘What if I get thirsty?’, ‘What if I can’t finish?’, you’ll stay in place instead of running.

That’s exactly what exam anxiety is like. But don’t worry, there are ways to cope with this anxiety.

Ways to Cope with Exam Anxiety

First of all, it’s important to understand the source of the anxiety. Why are you anxious? Are you a perfectionist? Are you afraid of failing? Or do you just think you haven’t prepared enough?

After finding the source, you can follow these steps:

  • Breathe Properly: Yes, simple but very effective. Take a deep breath, exhale slowly. Repeat this several times. You will feel relaxed instantly.
  • Make a Plan: Lack of planning increases anxiety. Determine which topics to study and what to do each day. Create a calendar and try to stick to it.
  • Take a Break: Studying constantly tires your brain. Take short breaks, get up and walk around, listen to music, do something you enjoy.
  • Think Positively: Try to say ‘I can do it’ instead of ‘I can’t’. Trust yourself. Remember your successes.
  • Sleep and Nutrition: Getting enough sleep and eating healthy is very important for both your physical and mental health. Stay away from fast food during exam periods.

Tips for Parents:

Dear parents, make your children feel that you are there for them. Love them unconditionally. Be there for them in their failures as well as their successes. Don’t put pressure on them. Don’t confuse your dreams with their dreams. Just support them.

Perhaps it has happened to you, when your child says ‘Mom, I’m very anxious’, it may be better to say ‘I understand, I’m listening to you’ instead of saying ‘Don’t worry, it will pass if you study’.

Remember, the exam is just a tool. Not the purpose of life. What matters is that your child is happy and healthy.

Actually, the truth is: Exam anxiety is a part of life. It is not possible to completely eliminate it. But it is possible to manage it, to control it. Believe in yourself, be planned, stay positive and get support from your loved ones. Good luck!
